VDOT CONTINUES TO PLOW AS SNOW LASTS INTO THE EVENING – PLEASE DO NOT TRAVEL
STAUNTON – (5:00 p.m.) Virginia Department of Transportation Staunton District crews and contractors have been hard at work all day on Sunday, January 16 during a major winter storm in the Shenandoah Valley. Approximately 900 – 920 pieces of equipment are deployed for snow removal in the Staunton District.
Snow is forecasted to end during the night with possible rain or freezing rain prior to the end of precipitation. High winds are forecasted making for continued hazardous travel.
As of 5 p.m. snow is still falling, quickly covering plowed roadways. Travel should be avoided or delayed. Crews will continue to plow and treat roads throughout the night.
Here are the road conditions as of 5:00 p.m. in the Virginia Department of Transportation Staunton District:
Interstate 64 – Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Augusta counties.
Inerstate 66 – Moderate conditions in Warren County.
Interstate 81 – Moderate conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Frederick counties.
Primary roads – Moderate conditions in Frederick, Shenandoah, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany and Bath counties. Minor conditions in Clarke County.
Secondary roads – Severe conditions in Alleghany County. Moderate conditions in Frederick, Shenandoah, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge and Bath counties. Minor conditions in Clarke County.

Road condition definitions:
Severe – drifting or partially blocked road.
Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway.
Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush.
