Featherbed Lane Bridge over Catoctin Creek Back Open in Lovettsville
Rehabilitation of historic John G. Lewis Memorial Bridge substantially complete

LOVETTSVILLE – The historic truss John G. Lewis Memorial Bridge that carries Featherbed Lane over Catoctin Creek reopened to traffic today, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

In January 2021, the bridge was closed for the John G. Lewis Memorial Bridge Rehabilitation project. The existing truss was installed above a new steel beam and timber deck bridge, a new pier was added and the railings were upgraded. The project is now substantially complete, with minor work occurring in the coming weeks until final completion with minimal impacts.

The $4.9 million project is financed with federal and state funding, including State of Good Repair funding used for bridges.

The bridge, which averaged 60 vehicles a day prior to closing, was originally built in 1889 on the Leesburg & Alexandria Turnpike (current Route 7) over Goose Creek to replace a bridge destroyed by flooding. In 1932, the bridge was dismantled and moved to its current location.

More information is on the project webpage.
