CONTRACT AWARDED FOR PASSING LANE PROJECT
Improvements to be made on U.S. 501 in Halifax County
LYNCHBURG, Va. – A $14.2 million contract to widen LP Bailey Memorial Highway (U.S. 501) and add a passing lane from just north of Murphy Grove Road (state Route 610) to the intersection with Cedar Grove Road (state Route 643) in Halifax County has been awarded to Haymes Brothers Inc. of Chatham, Virginia.
The project, which will also address sight distance concerns and alignment of a four-way intersection, will improve operations and safety.
During construction, which is expected to be complete by spring 2023, traffic will be maintained with a minimum of a single lane in either direction. Traffic will be detoured via a secondary route at times.
The entire project, including preliminary engineering, right of way and construction, is valued at approximately $20.1 million and was submitted by Halifax County for fiscal year 2017 SMART SCALE funding.
