FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Construction has started to widen Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) to four lanes between Interstate 95 and Route 1 in Spotsylvania County's Thornburg area, where around 15,000 vehicles pass each day.

A groundbreaking was held today with the Spotsylvania Board of Supervisors and Commonwealth Transportation Board Member Laura Sellers to mark the ceremonial beginning of construction.

Two projects will be accomplished through a single construction contract. A $21.6 million project will widen Mudd Tavern Road, and a $8 million project will establish Route 2092, a new secondary road parallel to Mudd Tavern Road that will intersect with Dan Bell Lane and South Roxbury Mill Road.

The projects are a partnership between Spotsylvania County and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

Spotsylvania County submitted an application to partially fund the Mudd Tavern Road widening project through Virginia’s SMART SCALE program. Additional funding is being provided through county investment, and through VDOT’s revenue-sharing program, which matches county funds with state transportation dollars.

The Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded a construction contract for $16.1 million to Allan Myers Va. Inc., to build both projects.

Widening Mudd Tavern Road and creating Route 2092 will increase capacity for travelers and support economic development in the Thornburg area.

When construction is complete in May 2025, Mudd Tavern Road will have four travel lanes between I-95 and Route 1.  A roundabout approximately halfway between I-95 and Route 1 will provide access for travelers seeking Route 2092.

Route 2092 will be a two-lane road and will improve connections between several properties north of Mudd Tavern Road in the Thornburg area. Another roundabout will control traffic at the access road's midpoint.

Sidewalk and a shared use path will be added along sections of Mudd Tavern Road, creating new space to walk, run or bike. Crosswalks and new traffic signal equipment will be installed at pedestrian crossings. New sidewalk will connect with existing sidewalk on the I-95 overpass.

Including the current project, more than $57 million has been invested recently in improving transportation in the Thornburg area. A reconstruction of the I-95 interchange at exit 118 (Thornburg) was finished in 2019, which also widened a two-lane interstate overpass to four lanes. The intersection of Route 1 and Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road/Morris Road) was widened in 2016 to accommodate new turn lanes, traffic signal equipment, sidewalk and pedestrian crossings.

Mudd Tavern Road will remain open to traffic during construction. Motorists should be alert for construction crews and slow-moving equipment operating in the work zone.

Periodic single lane closures and temporary traffic shifts will be required during construction. Most lane closures will be scheduled to avoid peak travel times on weekday mornings and afternoons.
