FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – While conditions have improved on major roads in the 14-county Fredericksburg District, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) urges drivers to avoid travel tonight and early tomorrow morning due to refreezing and additional freezing rain in the forecast.

Crews spent the day clearing snow, slush and ice from travel lanes on I-95, primary routes and major secondary roads. However, drivers may encounter slick spots or slush along the shoulder, especially at intersections, ramps, turn lanes and crossovers.

Work will continue overnight on secondary routes and subdivision streets, treating roads with salt, sand, and applying abrasives for traction. In addition, crews will patrol the area for refreezing and treat hazardous conditions as needed.

VDOT attributes today’s progress to the cooperation of the traveling public. “Thank you to everyone who avoided travel today and helped us make substantial progress toward clearing ice, snow and slush from our roads,” said Robbie Prezioso, P.E., VDOT Fredericksburg District Maintenance Engineer. “With another round of freezing rain expected through Friday morning, and below-freezing temperatures, we will continue treating roads for icy and slick surfaces, returning to focus again on I-95 and primary and high-volume secondary roads. We encourage drivers to delay unnecessary trips through tomorrow morning to give crews room to navigate and improve road conditions.”

If travel is necessary, drivers are encouraged to use extreme caution and:

• Check real-time road conditions before leaving home at 511Virginia
• Plan to allow extra travel time
• Remove any snow and ice from your windshield or car hood
• Reduce your vehicle speed
• Increase following distance between vehicles
