FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – As construction nears completion to improve the Exit 118/Thornburg interchange and replace the Interstate 95 overpass in Spotsylvania County, motorists may encounter daytime and overnight lane closures in the work zone for the next several weeks.

The project team will be finishing final tasks before opening all lanes on the realigned Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) bridge. The new four-lane overpass, with turn lanes and wider shoulders, replaced a structurally deficient bridge with two travel lanes.

Once all lanes open on the new bridge, traffic will be in its final configuration with traffic signals controlling traffic entering and exiting I-95.

For the next few weeks, drivers can anticipate lane closures on Mudd Tavern Road and Mallard Road for traffic signal work and grass seeding. A flagging crew will continue to direct one-way, alternating traffic on both roads near the interchange. Virginia State Police will assist with traffic control with any traffic signal work.

Weather permitting, the work zone will occur at the following times:

Mudd Tavern Road and Mallard Road

• Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. 
• Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Project Background

Construction on the $22.4 million project began in October 2017. Two of the four travel lanes on the new I-95 overpass opened a year later.

The project seeks to reduce congestion, accommodate future growth and enhance safety in the Thornburg area. An offset diamond interchange design was selected to minimize the right-of-way required for the road and ramp improvements.

Work is scheduled to be completed in late June 2019.
